JAKARTA - Traffic Director of Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Pol Latif Usman proposed that the amount of parking rates in Jakarta be increased. This proposal is made to increase the transfer of the use of private vehicles by the public to public transportation.According to Latif, if Jakarta's parking rates are made more expensive than currently applied, the effects that occur seem to force people to use public transportation in mobility.This was conveyed by Latif while attending a working meeting of Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD with the ranks of the DKI Transportation Agency."I propose to increase this, how this parking must be done. That is one (way) to force people to switch to public transportation," said Latif at the DKI Jakarta DPRD Building, Tuesday, January 24.Latif views that this proposal was expressed on the basis of the condition of congestion in Jakarta that has not yet been overcome. In fact, the volume of Jakarta's traffic density is currently increasing from the previous year.Latif said that the congestion index in Jakarta currently has reached more than 50 percent at 7,800 kilometers of roads in the capital city.Latif said that the current traffic density condition in Jakarta was similar to what happened in 2019. At that time, the congestion index reached 53 percent.Based on the survey results of the British congestion monitoring agency TomTom, Indonesia also ranked 10 of the world's most congested cities in 2019."We haven't calculated the congestion index yet, but, my estimate since the end of 2022 is already above 50 percent. This is our common concern on how the current situation in Jakarta is," said Latif."Of course, if it is at 50 percent, it is very worrying. Moreover, at 50 percent, at 40 percent, Jakarta is no longer safe," he continued.Therefore, according to Latif, one way that can be done to reduce congestion other than the odd-even implementation and planning of a paid road system or ERP is to increase parking rates."For this traffic jam, there is only one solution, how can we fix public transportation, we support it, we really develop it. Actually, from Jakarta, we don't miss transportation with foreign transportation. This is how we just force people to use it actually," he added.
