"Mau Proportional Open Atau Terutup, Gerindra Ready To Participate In The Constitutional Court's Decree"

JAKARTA - The Gerindra Party stated that it is ready to follow whatever the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) regarding the judicial review of the Election Law, both returning to a closed and proportional proportional system for the 2024 General Election. "Yes, if the Constitutional Court has decided, we are ready, we will follow," said the Daily Chairperson of the Gerindra DPP, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, January 3. However, if the Constitutional Court decides to return to the proportional closed party voting in the Pilleg implementation, continued Dasco, Gerindra, worried that the political parties that have just participated in the election will find it difficult to socialize his party.

"Of course we from the Gerindra Party also prioritize the principles of justice and equity. We also see that many new parties want to contest, must also be given the opportunity to participate in the Legislative Election. If it is carried out proportionally closed, it will be more difficult to disseminate information to the community, because the party is still new," said the deputy chairman of the DPR. Meanwhile, if it remains proportional to open, then new legislative candidates will easily campaign for themselves.

"And more than that, we also provide opportunities for party cadres to be more active in socializing, campaigning, if carried out in an open proportion," continued Dasco.

"But whatever it is, we will follow the provisions of the Constitutional Court if it has been decided," he added. On the other hand, Dasco assessed, the statement by KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari regarding the possibility of a closed proportional system is not a wild discourse. According to him, this is a kind of warning for political parties and legislative candidates to prepare for whatever the Constitutional Court's decision is.

"I think what the KPU chairman said was a warning, because there has been a lawsuit or judicial review at the Constitutional Court. The head of the KPU said that there is a possibility that this is proportional to being closed, because there is a possibility that the Constitutional Court will decide. So it is not a wild statement from the KPU but it is a warning, that this is possible, you know, informing the wider community and political parties," explained Dasco.

Previously, the Chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU) Hasyim Asy'ari, talked about the possibility that the General Election system or the 2024 General Election would return to using a closed proportional system. He said the system was being discussed through the Constitutional Court (MK) trial.

However, Hasyim explained, it was only an assumption based on the existence of a lawsuit at the Constitutional Court regarding the current electoral law. So it is not a proposal from the KPU but from the current electoral factual conditions.

"So maybe prospective election participants can get ready and follow developments if the Court grants the lawsuit," he said during the KPU Year End Note event at the KPU office, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Thursday, December 29, 2022.
