After Being Rocked By An M 4.9 Earthquake, BMKG Recorded 54 TIMES A Susulant Earthquake Occurring In Jayapura

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported 54 aftershocks after an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 4.9 hit Jayapura City. Before being eliminated, the strength of the earthquake was recorded at M 5.5.

"The aftershocks in Jayapura have been 54 times," said Head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Division Daryono via his Twitter account, @DaryonoBMKG, Monday, January 2.

The earthquake on Monday, January 2 at 03.24 WIT was 14 km northeast of Jayapura City.

With a depth of 10 km, the coordinates of the earthquake were located at 2.58 South Latitude-140.67 East Longitude.

BMKG informed that the earthquake in Jayapura City and Regency was felt on a scale of IV-V MMI in Jayapura City.

Earthquake tremors were also felt on a similar scale in Genyem, Jayapura Regency.
