Emery Will Fight Martinez On Controversial Celebration At The 2022 World Cup

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery will speak with Emiliano Martinez about the controversial celebration of the Argentine goalkeeper on the 2022 World Cup stage when he returns to the English Premier League club.

Martinez made a key save while blocking Randal Kolo Muani's strike in extra time and then thwarted Kingsley Coman on a penalty shootout in Qatar as Argentina beat France in a thrilling final.

However, he was seen doing indecent gestures after winning the gold gloves trophy as the best goalkeeper in the tournament.

In addition, during Argentina's winning parade in Buenos Aires, he was also seen holding a baby doll with a face covered by a photo of French star striker Kylian Mbappe.

In the final, Mbappe scored a hat-trick as France twice got up to take the game on penalties and further beat Martinez during the opener's penalty.

"If you have big emotions, sometimes it's difficult to control them," Emery told reporters Friday.

"I'm going to talk to him next week about some celebrations. We're very proud of him. He won the World Cup with his national team and that's amazing.

"He will be back next week. I want him to rest now because after great emotions and hard work, he has to take a few days off to rest then he will return to work with us."

Meanwhile the French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Custera, who spoke Friday morning, criticized Martinez's behavior.

"I feel it's sad," he said. "It's vulgar and inappropriate. Emiliano Martinez can't control himself. It's really sad."
