Having Their Own Laws, The KPK Is Confident That The New Criminal Code Will Not Weaken The Eradication Of Corruption

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) believes its work is not affected by the Criminal Code (KUHP) which was just passed by the DPR. The KPK is known to have its own rules at work, namely the KPK Law Number 19 of 2019.

This was conveyed by KPK Chairman Firli Bahuri in response to the ratification of the new Criminal Code. In the law, Article 603 is in the spotlight because perpetrators of corruption can only be sentenced to imprisonment for at least 2 years and a maximum of 20 years.

"We have no concern, it's okay if there is a certain article that regulates what can be called corruption in the Criminal Code, but we have our own law on corruption and we have the authority," said Firli, quoted from the Indonesian KPK YouTube, Thursday, December 8.

Firli said his institution was different from other law enforcement officers in taking action against corruption cases. There is a clause that states that law enforcers work based on their duties and authorities.

Thus, the provisions at the KPK cannot be equated with other officers. "The provisions in the chapter of this special crime are mentioned, so, carried out by law enforcement state institutions based on the duties and negligence regulated in their respective laws," said the former Deputy for Enforcement of the KPK.

Furthermore, Firli ensured that his institution would continue to brush off corrupt officials and private sectors. The new Criminal Code will not change and interfere with the way the anti-corruption commission works.

"It does not interfere with law enforcement, especially the eradication of corruption," he said.

Previously, the DPR approved the RKUHP to be ratified into law. This approval was given through the Plenary Meeting which was held on Tuesday, December 6.

"Can the Criminal Code Bill be approved to be passed into law," said Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad at the DPR Plenary Meeting at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, December 6.

Dasco said all factions had expressed their opinion at level I regarding the RKUHP to be brought to the DPR Plenary Meeting for decision making.
