JAKARTA - The World Economic Forum (WEF) released the latest data regarding the total expenditure for the Indonesian people hijab during 2022. It was recorded that the total consumption of the hijab reached 1.02 billion hijab per year.

The transaction value of the hijab consumption reached 6.09 billion US dollars or equivalent to Rp. 91.135 trillion. Unfortunately, local hijab products purchased by the Indonesian people are only 25 percent.

The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf), Sandiaga Salahuddin Unorangkat, spoke about this.

Sandiaga Uno encouraged local products to host and even win in their own country. He revealed that the creative economy sector contributed the largest to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), among others, by 7.38 percent to the total national economy with a total GDP of around Rp852.24 trillion.

Therefore, the fashion sub-sector, especially the hijab production, must continue to be optimized. The goal is for Indonesia to become the champion in its own country.

"We must seize the market and become champions in our own country. This is a potential business opportunity and is able to open the widest possible employment opportunities for the community, so we must optimize it," said Sandiaga Uno.

Sandiaga Uno then explained that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy continues to boost the creative economy sector by launching various programs and providing a number of conveniences for creative economy business actors.

Among them are through the Indonesian Creative Appreciation program, facilitation of registration of Intellectual Property Rights (HKI) and the stimulus program of the Proudly Made in Indonesia National Movement (BBI).

"Not only Proud Made in Indonesia, but also proud to buy local creative products. Local pride! That must be instilled, so that this extraordinary potential can have a direct impact on society," said Sandiaga Uno.

Furthermore, said Sandiaga Uno, the hijab which is one of the halal products he explained already has a promising local market and can become a leading commodity.

Given that Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world with a total of 236.53 million people or 86.88 percent of the total 272.23 million people in June 2021.

Referring to WEF data, global hijab spending will increase by 5.7 percent in 2021, up from USD 279 billion to USD 295 billion.

The sector is expected to grow 6 percent or USD 313 billion by 2022.

"This projection proves the size of the global hijab market. Therefore, this business opportunity must be optimized to create jobs and business opportunities," concluded Sandiaga Uno.
