Observer: Development Of Green Industrial Zones Is Important To Encourage Decarbonization

JAKARTA - Environmental economist IPB University Aceng Hidayat assesses Pertamina's efforts in developing green industrial areas or green industry clusters as positive because they play an important role in encouraging decarbonization.

"That's good, because of awareness from the industry to reduce high-emison (high-carbon) by improving the process so as to produce low-emission (low emission) carbon emissions. We welcome this," he said, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, November 23.

According to him, there are many factors that affect carbon emissions in industrial areas, one of which is input, which if the input uses wasteful energy material it will produce high carbon or vice versa.

Another factor is the process, he continued, if the process uses environmentally friendly technology, it will automatically produce outputs that are also environmentally friendly and low in carbon.

Aceng gave an example of the use of solar power plants (PLTS) where the use of PLTS in industrial areas is one of the steps to reduce carbon, because of the input of solar power.

"Then it is processed and stored in a battery and then used. In addition, the process is also environmentally friendly. So the use of PLTS is one of the steps to reduce carbon emissions," he said in a written statement.

According to him, the use of PLTS is different from coal, where the input does contain carbon. In this case, it must go through as many carbon removal processes as possible.

"So the input is dirty, then through the cleaning process, it can only produce clean energy. This is different from the sun, whose input itself is clean and then processed and can produce renewable energy (EBT)," he said.

He added that carbon reduction could be by reuse, reduce, recycle or circular economy, either micro or macro.

"So if an industry does not implement an economic circular, it will be a waste that will occur, due to efficiency factors," he said.

Pertamina, currently plays a role in the development of a green industrial area or a "green industry cluster" as a commitment to the Net Zero Emission (NZE) Roadmap in achieving the zero carbon emission target by 2060.

One of them, through Pertamina Power Indonesia in collaboration with PT Jababeka Infrastruktur for the development of the Jababeka green industrial area. The initial stage carried out is through installing panels for Roof Solar Power Plants (PLTS).
