President Bolsonaro Said Brazil Was At The End Of The Pandemic When It Entered Its Second Wave
JAKARTA - Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stated that his country was at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bolsonaro is increasingly convinced that COVID-19 has now become the common cold. In addition, of course, because a vaccine will be available soon.
"We are at the tail end of the pandemic. Compared to other countries in the world, our government is the best or one of the best in dealing with it," said Bolsonaro, quoted by CNA, Friday, December 11.
Through this statement Bolsonaro tried to silence his critics. However, Bolsonaro's claim is considered absurd considering that Brazil is experiencing a high increase in transmission and deaths due to COVID-19. Even experts say Brazil is in the second wave.
The intensive care unit (ICU) at the public hospital in Rio de Janeiro is one hundred percent full. Meanwhile, preparations for the vaccination campaign for Brazilians were then disrupted by the politicization of competition between Bolsonaro and Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria, who was predicted to compete for the 2022 elections.
Brazil has seen a surge in deaths of more than a thousand per day, from June to August. The jump had decreased to an average of 300 deaths last month. However, the number has risen again this week, jumping to 800 deaths.
In total, so far Brazil has confirmed 6,728,452 cases of COVID-19 transmission. Among them, there were 178,995 deaths.
