Earthquake M 5 Guncang Jember, BPBD Volunteer Contacts In 31 District Himpun Data Damage
The Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is still collecting information regarding the damage caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5 rocked Jember Regency, East Java, Thursday, November 10 morning.
"Until this morning we have continued to seek information from volunteers spread across 31 sub-districts to find out whether the earthquake caused damage," said Secretary of BPBD Jember Heru Widagdo in Jember, East Java, quoted from Antara, Thursday, November 10.
Based on information from the official website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), a shallow earthquake with a magnitude 5 rocked Jember on Thursday at 00.42 WIB with a depth of 10 kilometers.
The epicenter was 338 km southwest of Jember at coordinates 11.23 South Latitude to 113.36 East Longitude and the earthquake was also reported to have no potential for a tsunami.
"The shallow earthquake caused an unknown impact and some Jember residents admitted that they did not feel an earthquake because it occurred at 00.42 WIB while they were fast asleep," he said.
According to him, Jember Regency became one of the earthquake-prone areas in East Java, and was even shaken two to three times a month, but there was no potential for a tsunami and no damage from the earthquake.
"I hope that there will be no houses or public facilities damaged by the 5. Volunteers are currently still checking," he said.
Heru appealed to the public to always be vigilant and alert related to earthquakes, because these disasters could not be predicted and usually the Jember BPBD received reports from the BMKG after the earthquake.
"Several times, socialization has also been carried out to students and residents regarding the earthquake, and even earthquake simulations have been carried out in banks and offices so that evacuation route signs are provided when an earthquake occurs at any time," he said.
BMKG also mentioned that Jember was close to the potential source of the earthquake, namely the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate which plunged under the Eurasian Plate in southern East Java (zone megathrust), so that it became an area prone to being rocked by earthquakes.
In addition, the Jember region is also close to active fault earthquake sources, both on land and on the seabed.
Based on BMKG data, Jember Regency was hit by an earthquake measuring magnitude 5 on December 16, 2021, which was triggered by an active fault on the seabed, causing 38 houses to be damaged.
