British Firms Facing Climate Change With Beer And Chips

JAKARTA - Emissions from beer fermentation in breweries usually produce high amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). But the British company CCM Technologies has a way to take advantage of the carbon dioxide.

CCm Technologies came up with the idea to capture carbon dioxide and mix it with potato waste. This mixture can be converted into fertilizer. They had tested the fertilizer on potato seed beds earlier in the year and it was adopted by the well-known chip company Walkers.

Quoting Sky News, Wednesday, December 9, the chip company based in Leicester, England, it will install carbon dioxide capture equipment at its plant before the harvest in 2022. Walkers is expected to reduce its carbon emissions by 70 percent once the project is broadly launched. It is even expected to become a carbon negative potato producer by 2030.

David Wilkinson, who is a snack conglomerate from the United States (US), PepsiCo, which also owns Walkers, said, "From circular potatoes to circular crops, this innovation with CCm Technologies can provide lessons for the entire food system, enabling the agricultural sector to play its part. in fighting climate change.

"This is just the beginning of an ambitious journey, we are very excited to try fertilizers on a larger scale and discover its full potential."

Wilkinson also said that the carbon dioxide processing initiative was a step in the right direction. He promised that his company would continue to work hard to reduce the impact of carbon dioxide from processing its products, manufacturing locations, to consumption.

Pawel Kisielewski, from CCm Technologies, said that CCm Technologies welcomed PepsiCo's intention to choose its technology. This shows the great potential that an innovative approach to promoting sustainable agriculture in the UK can have.

"By enabling the sustainable reuse of processed waste resources and locking captured carbon dioxide into the soil, our partnership is a significant step forward in proving that agriculture can play a role in carbon reduction and a circular economy," said Kisielewski.

CCm Technologies says they produce carbon dioxide-based fertilizers at roughly the same price as conventional products. Carbon dioxide from conventional fertilizer production is a big factor in keeping emissions from agriculture static, as most other emissions throughout society have decreased.

Peter Hammond at CCm Technologies said there was increasing public awareness that something had to be done to deal with climate change. He saw many small steps being taken together to make something significant.

But a recent survey from the Break Free From Plastic Campaign ranked PepsiCo the second highest, after Coke, in producing the amount of plastic pollution it produces.

Some environmentalists consider Pepsi to be a symbol of a culture of exile. Pepsi is known to have a lot of plastic waste in 43 countries.
