Breakdancing Will Be Competed In The 2024 Paris Olympics
JAKARTA - Breakdancing along with three other sports namely surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing have secured a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics after the International Olympic Committee ratified their inclusion on Monday, December 7.
The Paris 2024 organizing committee last year submitted the four sports to the sports list and is awaiting final review from the OIC Executive Council.
Surfing, climbing and skateboarding, have become part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, after being put together with karate by the Japanese host committee.
Breakdancing or breaking is a dance style that originally developed on the streets of the United States.
Breakdancing made its debut at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics said they wanted to present a program that adapts to the times and will attract a new and younger audience.
Under the IOC regulations that were first introduced at the Tokyo Olympics, each host city is allowed to choose sports and submit them for inclusion in the Olympics if the sport is popular in that country and adds to the appeal of the world games.
The OIC has gone to great lengths to refresh its Olympic sports program to stay relevant to younger sponsors, broadcast rights holders and fans, Reuters reported as quoted by Antara, Tuesday.
