Mexico Becomes Host Of The 2036 Olympics

JAKARTA - Mexico on Wednesday announced its bid to host the 2036 Olympics, more than half a century ago after it first held the Summer Olympics.

"We are starting the step once again to host the 2036 Olympics," said head of the Mexican Olympic Committee Maria Jose Alcala during a press conference with Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, as quoted by Antara, Thursday.

Ebrard described Mexico as a "sport force," while noting that success would make Mexico the first country to host the FIFA World Cup for the third time in 2026, with the United States and Canada.

"Our target is to bring the Olympics to Mexico by 2036, or if it doesn't work by 2040," he said, adding that the proposed location as the main location of the event has yet to be decided.

"City should not adapt to the Olympics. Major facilities should not be built if they are not used later. It must be reversed -- the Olympics must be adapted to the city," said Ebrard.

The submission will be the second time for the Latin American country to host the Summer Olympics.
