Who Is Syahrul Yasin Limpo?

JAKARTA - Syahrul Yasin Limpo or Dr. H. Syahrul Yasin Limpo, SH, M.Sc., MH Syahrul Yasin Limpo is the 28th Minister of Agriculture. The former governor of South Sulawesi has been minister of agriculture since 23 October 2019 in the Forward Indonesian Cabinet for the 2019-2024 Period.

Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo was appointed as Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ad Interim by President Joko Widodo. Syahrul's appointment for the past few days is to replace the position of Coordinating Minister (Menko) for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan who is currently on duty abroad.

Syahrul's appointment refers to the Letter of the Minister of State Secretary Number B-918 / M.Sesneg / D-3 / AN.00.03 / 12/2020 dated December 2, 2020. The letter was addressed to the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo. State Minister Pratikno explained that President Joko Widodo appointed Syahrul to replace Luhut Binsar Panjaitan as Acting Minister of KKP.

"We respectfully inform you that the President (Jokowi) is pleased to appoint the Minister of Agriculture to replace the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment as the Ad Interim Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries," said State Secretary Pratikno, in a letter quoted by VOI, Thursday, December 3.

Syahrul's appointment was motivated by a letter from the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment number B-3863 / MARVES / MARITIM / RT.01.00 / XI / 2020 dated 22 November 2020.

"In essence, (Luhut) asked the President for permission to make an official trip abroad on December 2-10, 2020," the letter wrote.

Syahrul Yasin Limpo was born in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on March 16, 1955. The second child of H. Muh. Yasin Limpo with Hj. Nurhayati Yasin Limpo graduated from SD Negeri Mangkura Makassar, SMP Negeri 6 Makassar, and SMA Catholic Cendrawasih Ujung Pandang.

Syahrul likes writing. Therefore, during college he was active as editor in chief of the student bulletin of the Faculty of Law Unhas named Justisi. He graduated with a law degree in 1983.

Syahrul's interest in law was evident in the higher education he had. He took a master's degree in LAN (State Administration Institute) in 1999.

He continued his education and obtained a Master of Laws degree from Hasanuddin University Makassar in 1998, then a Doctor of Law Studies, Hasanuddin University Makassar in 2008.

Syahrul's father was a former fighter and had served in the military with the rank of Colonel. His father was the Regent of Gowa and Maros. His mother was also a member of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD).

This is where his mother's footsteps in politics began to be followed. Early in his career, when he was a Golkar cadre and trusted as the Regent of Gowa from 1994 to 2002. Then, he became Deputy Governor from 2003 to 2008. In the same year, Syahrul was elected Governor of South Sulawesi in 2008. He was elected for two terms.

Syahrul's steps in politics were getting brighter. On 23 October 2019, Syahrul was officially appointed by President Joko Widodo to become assistant to the president in agriculture for the 2019-2024 period replacing Amran Sulaiman, the previous minister of Agriculture who also came from South Sulawesi.

Career at ASN Syahrul Yasin Limpo's career as an ASN began in Goa Regency in 1980. Changed positions until he became Regent of Gowa in 2012.

Actions in political parties Before becoming the Chairman of the DPP NasDem Party, Syahrul actually started his political journey as a cadre of the Golkar Party. Had become Chairman of the Golkar DPD South Sulawesi. However in 2018, Syahrul moved to the Nasdem Party. There he became Chairman of the DPP.
