Real Madrid Threatened To Fail To Qualify For The Knockout Stages After Being Beaten By Shakhtar 2-0

JAKARTA - Real Madrid is overshadowed by the threat of failing to step out of the Champions League group stage after being beaten by Shakhtar Donetsk 0-2 on a visit to the NSK Olympiyskiy Stadium, Kiev, Ukraine for the fifth match of Group B on Tuesday local time (Wednesday WIB).

If Borussia Moenchengladbach beat Inter Milan in another Group B match which was later on, Real will not be free to decide their own destiny.

Gladbach is confirmed to be at the top of Group B until next week with at least nine points, overshadowed by Shakhtar who is above Real Madrid because of the head-to-head advantage despite both collecting seven points, Antara notes according to the official UEFA website.

Shakhtar beat Real in Spain in the first-round tie and made another surprise thanks to two goals from substitutes Dentinho and Manor Solomon in the second half.

In that match, Marco Asensio had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock but his close range shot hit the post.

Real's next chance came from Karim Benzema, whose shot was saved by keeper Anatoli Trubin. The goalkeeper also performed well in preventing Marco Asensio. Shakhtar was forced to defend more of his own area, which prevented them from registering a single shot on goal for the visitors.

Real threatened again at the start of the second half, when Benzema's ball was sent by Nacho with a high header. Shakhtar did not want to be pressed further, they then got their chance through Taison who was able to get past Varane before releasing a shot which Thibuat Courtois could hold.

The hosts broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. A pass from Viktor Kovalenko caused confusion for Ferland Mendy and Varane, allowing Dentinho to complete a left-footed finishing shot.

Varane makes a vital rescue to prevent a threat from Kovalenko. But another Shakhtar counter-attack resulted in a second in the 82nd minute, as Solomon found room to dribble from his own area before beating goalkeeper Courtois.

In the final group round matches, Real will host top standings Gladbach, while Inter arrive Shakhtar, on Wednesday (9/12).
