IPW On The Tragedy Of The Kanjuruhan Stadium: Police Only Asked For Security Assistance

JAKARTA - Chairman of Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) Sugeng Teguh Santoso stated that in the incident at the Kanjuruhan Malang Stadium in the football match between Arema vs Persebaya, the party in full responsibility for the incident should be the organizing committee (Panpel) for football matches.

"The implementing committee is the most responsible in this matter (the riots at the Malang Stadium)," said IPW Chairman Sugeng Teguh Santoso to VOI, Tuesday, October 4.

IPW said that in this case the police were only limited to institutions that assisted and were asked to secure matches, and the Police were not the organizers.

"Actually, the police were asked for help. The police were not the organizers but he was asked for help," said Sugeng.

Sugeng explained, responding to the deadly riots at the Kanjuruhan Malang Stadium, there were actually 3 parties who played a role.

"So here there are actually 3 parties. First is the organizing committee that is most responsible, the second is the police. Well, before that implementation, the police and the organizing committee must hold a coordination meeting," he explained.

In the coordination meeting, continued Sugeng, whether it was discussed that (use) tear gas.

"This implementing committee should be asked, know or not (about the use of tear gas)," he explained.

Furthermore, said Sugeng, the third party who is in charge is security (stadium security).

"In that security, the doors of the stadium in the beginning of the match until the match is finished cannot be closed. That is one of the rules in the security," said Sugeng.
