Aspar Jaelolo Rebut Gold Medal, Veddriq Maintains The 2022 Rock Climbing World Champion
JAKARTA - The Indonesian athletes achieved extraordinary results at the 2022 Rock Climbing World Cup series Jakarta, Saturday, September 24, 2022. Aspar Jaelolo won the gold medal in the speed number.
Meanwhile, Veddriq Leonardo confirmed that he would become world champion in the 2022 rock climbing speed number.
Veddriq actually only lasted until the semifinals. This result puts Veddriq in fifth position with 545 points.
This additional point is enough to bring the 25-year-old athlete to maintain his status as world champion by collecting a total of 4,455 points in the general standings.
He beat Kiromal Katibin who was in second place with 4.080 points, including an additional 805 points from being runner-up at the IFSC World Cup Jakarta 2022.
The third position is occupied by an athlete from China, Jinbao Long, with a total of 3,105 points.
Veddriq said he was satisfied with the results so far this season. He is even more motivated to look at the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers.
"What is certain is that I am very happy because I won an overall title and Indonesia got one gold and one silver in the speed number in Jakarta," said Veddriq after the match, as quoted by Antara.
"This achievement builds optimism for the Indonesian rock climbing team to welcome the 2024 Paris Olympics. Next year, we will do the qualification and we ask for prayers, support from the Indonesian people so that they can reach the Paris Olympics later," he continued.
Throughout the 2022 season, Veddriq won two of the seven IFSC World Cup 2022 rounds. Each in Seoul, South Korea on May 6-8 and Salt Lake City, United States (US) on May 27-29.
The rest, he occupies third place in Salt Lake City (2022 May), fourth in Vilars, Switzerland (30 June-2 July) and Chamonix, France (8-10 July), and fifth in Jakarta, today. Meanwhile, in ability, Scotland (9-11 September), he was absent.
The result repeats last year's achievement, when Veddriq also won the world number speed climbing rock 2021 after packing 200 points from two rounds which took place at Salt Lake City and Villars.
