After Fighting GGG, Canelo Has 5 Options For Next Duel
JAKARTA - Despite focusing on healing his left hand injury and being ruled out for the remainder of this year, Canelo Alvarez has already considered his next opponent in the ring.
The 32-year-old boxer successfully defended his undisputed title weighing 168 pounds. On Saturday night, Canelo defeated Gennady Golovkin unanimously.
It is known, Canelo is not in 100 percent condition due to a long left hand injury. Now, he had to go up to the treatment table.
However, Mexican boxers have already chosen their next opponent. One of them could be a rematch against Dmitry Bivol, as long as the Russian boxer beats mandatory challenger Gilberto Ramirez.
After Bivol, The Mirror mentioned four other options for Canelo. The first is David Benavidez, who has collected 26 wins without defeat. The American-born star will be the toughest test for Canelo weighing 168 pounds.
However, Canelo stated that he was not interested in the fight.
"You think why I don't want to fight Mexican boxers or Benavidez," he said. "I heard his father talk a lot of nonsense, but let's see, see what he has achieved, nothing."
Another opponent who may be Jermall Charlo, who has a record 32 wins and without defeat. The American star is a 160-pound WBC champion, but says he is willing to advance to class if offered the opportunity.
The third option is Artur Beterbiev. The Russian boxer, who is the defending champion of 175 pounds, holds IBF, WBC and WBO titles in the division. He has shown the highest talent during his unbeaten journey.
Lastly, there is Oleksandr Usyk, who will be the biggest challenge for Canelo given the weight difference. However, although Canelo says he is willing to face the heavyweight champion, Usyk's focus is likely against Deontay Wilder or winner Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua.
In essence, there is no shortage of choice for Canelo, which took several months to consider the next fight after beating Golovkin.
