Chairman Of The Press Council Azyumardi Azra Dies, Allegedly Heart Attack
JAKARTA - Chairman of the Press Council and Professor of UIN Jakarta Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra died at Kedah Hospital, Selangor, Malaysia, Sunday, September 18 at 12.30 local time.
Based on information from a member of the Press Council Tri Agung Kristanto, Azyumardi is visiting Malaysia to attend Islamic seminars and democracy as speakers.
"He went to Malaysia at the invitation of Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, as an Islamic scholar to speak at Islamic and democratic seminars last Saturday," Agung said when contacted by VOI, Sunday.
Agung explained that Prof. Azra died allegedly of a heart attack.
"He left Friday morning, and 30 minutes before landing he was reported to have had an extraordinary cough. He was reported to have had a heart attack," he explained.
Until now, it is not known for sure the repatriation of Azyumardi's body to Indonesia and when it will be buried.
