Joe Biden Breaks US Election Record Raises More Than 80 Thousand Votes
JAKARTA - Joe Biden became the first presidential candidate of the United States (US) to win more than 80 million votes. Although the number is already breaking records, Biden's popular votes are still likely to increase in the coming days as the vote counting process continues.
Quoting CNN, Wednesday, November 25, to Tuesday, November 24 evening, Biden has won more than 80,011,000 votes. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has more than 73,800,000 votes.
Biden himself has won 306 electoral votes. Meanwhile, Trump's vote 232. Many Americans vote by post in an effort to protect themselves from exposure to COVID-19 amid the global pandemic.
Experts have warned for months that there will be a lengthy vote count that could be extended to days after the November 3 election days. Biden's new record cemented his decisive victory over Trump.
Trump himself has not acknowledged the election results, even as his administration has begun the process of an official presidential transition after the General Services Administration (GSA) recognized Biden's victory. The GSA has advised that the Donald Trump administration is ready to begin a formal transition process.
This was conveyed by letter on behalf of the GSA leader, Emily Murphy. The letter is an important step in the transition even though Trump has yet to admit defeat, more than two weeks since Biden was named the tally winner.
Murphy said he was not pressured by the White House to delay a formal transition. He also rejected the decision, which he said had to be taken for fear of being perceived as favoritism.
"Know that I make decisions independently, based on existing laws and facts," Murphy wrote.
"I have never been directly or indirectly pressured by Executive Branch officials --including those working in the White House or GSA - regarding the substance or timing of my decision. To be clear, I have received no directions to delay my determination."
The letter strengthened the legitimacy of Biden's victory. What Murphy said would allow the transition to officially begin, allow current GSA officials to coordinate with the Biden team and provide millions of government funding for the transition.
A number of states have also begun certifying their election results, including Pennsylvania and Nevada. The two of them completed their certification on Tuesday, November 24.
The certification follows a dramatic meeting of the Michigan state electoral council, which also voted to certify Biden's winning election result after one of two Republicans decided to abstain. As well as starting to validate election results, many of Trump's lawsuits were dropped.
This indicates that Trump's efforts to delegitimize - the election narrative full of conspiracies and conspiracies - are almost over. Trump's campaign lawsuits to delay election certification have been rejected in many states. Trump's legal team has failed to provide evidence of widespread voter fraud.
