W Sumatra - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.3 magnitude (M) aftershock rocked Siberut Island, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra (West Sumatra). This earthquake occurred shortly after the first earthquake had a magnitude of M 6.2.

"As of 07.10 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there was one aftershock with a magnitude of M5.3," said the acting Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a written statement, quoted from Antara, Sunday, September 11.

Daryono explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 1.18° South Latitude; 98.53° East Longitude, or precisely located on land in the West Cyberut region, Mentawai Islands, at a depth of 27 km.

"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to plate subduction activity in the Megathrust Mentawai-Siberut zone. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism," said Daryono.
