WHO Calls For African Countries To Be Alert To COVID-19 Ahead Of Year-End Holidays

JAKARTA - The World Health Organization (WHO) reminded African countries to be aware of the spike in COVID-19 cases. This was announced by WHO for the African region regarding the possibility of a spike in transmission rates ahead of the year-end holidays.

Launching Yeni Safak, Friday, November 20, WHO said that the African continent has experienced a significant increase in COVID-19 cases since early October. It was recorded that nearly 20 countries in the African continent had experienced an increase.

“As we approach the end of the year, when people go on activities to spend their holidays together, there is a greater risk of contracting COVID-19. In the face of COVID-19, complacency can be dangerous, ”said WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti.

“New clusters of cases can emerge in places so far unaffected when people travel or gather for celebrations. But we can lower the risk by wearing masks, limiting the number of people gathering, maintaining physical distance, and practicing good hand hygiene. We can celebrate but do it safely, "he added.

Meanwhile, there are currently more than two million confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the African continent. According to WHO, of these, more than 1.7 million cases had been cured. Meanwhile, the number of victims who died was at 48 thousand cases.
