When Experts, Scientists And Academics Join The Indonesian Earthquake And Tsunami Consortium
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has formed the Indonesian Earthquake and Tsunami Consortium (KGTI) to strengthen the tsunami early warning system.
The consortium consists of earthquake and tsunami experts and researchers from various relevant ministries/agencies, universities, and disaster practitioners.
"This consortium is in response to the BMKG's response to the trend of increasing earthquake activity in the last few years and the fact that the tsunami generating mechanism is increasingly complex," said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati in the signing of the Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for the InaTEWS Merah Putih Processing System and The online launch of KGTI in Jakarta, Thursday, August 25, quoted from Antara.
Dwikorita said the presence of the KGTI is also to further increase the independence of the nation in order to strengthen the operation of the Tsunami Early Warning System. This strategy is part of the BMKG's commitment to realizing zero victims.
KGTI is divided into three working groups, namely the first, the earthquake working group. Second, the tsunami working group and third, the evaluation and development/strengthening working group for earthquake and tsunami monitoring, analysis and dissemination systems.
In general, continued Dwikorita, the main task of KGTI is to support the development of the Merah Putih InaTEWS. In addition, the task of KGTI is to provide evaluations and recommendations for the operational system for monitoring earthquakes and tsunami early warnings at the BMKG.
Dwikorita is optimistic that the presence of KGTI will be able to strengthen the tsunami early warning system built by the BMKG.
"The involvement of experts, experts, and researchers from various institutions and universities will certainly strengthen BMKG, especially regarding the data and information it produces," he said.
Dwikorita said a number of universities involved in this consortium include Gadjah Mada University (UGM), University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Ten November Institute of Technology (ITS), as well as several earth experts from the Research and Innovation Agency. National (BRIN).
A number of benefits are expected from the establishment of KGTI for BMKG, namely first, providing input in scientific and technological development for earthquake monitoring and analysis operations, which include monitoring strategies, processing, data analysis, modeling, dissemination, emerging technologies, and application development, to support the realization of a reliable Monitoring, Processing and Dissemination System.
Second, providing input in scientific and technological development for Tsunami Early Warning operations, especially in tsunami observation strategies and policies, tsunami data processing and analysis, modeling, dissemination, and tsunami early warning services.
Third, provide input for evaluating the performance of the earthquake monitoring system and tsunami early warning system.
