Regarding Hijab, Komnas Perempuan: Men And Women Are Equal, Don't Force Dress Up
JAKARTA - Komnas Perempuan member Imam Nahei said that from the point of view of religion and modern beliefs, men and women have equal status.
On that basis, Imam considered that forcing certain clothes on women was inappropriate. This was conveyed by Imam in a webinar entitled "Strengthening the National Character by Celebrating the Diversity of Indonesian Women's Clothing" on Thursday, August 18.
"Today, there are many perspectives that say that men and women are equal, women's humanity is equal, the spirit of women and the spirit of men is no different, both come from God the Creator," he said.
He gave an example, Islam regulates women's clothing, but these regulations are an effort to open up space for women which was previously too tightly regulated by previous religions.
"The imposition of the hijab on women was preceded by the historical perspective of religions and cultures towards women," said Imam.
He added that this equal perspective has now been recognized by the community, but there are still many who do not open up space for freedom for women.
"Unfortunately, efforts for equality of men and women in this public space are not accompanied by restoring the cultural space as well as in clothing, so the humanity is the same but the clothes still use old-style clothing as a symbol of women's domestication. ," he said, according to Antara.
Therefore, his party asked cultural experts and religious leaders to carry out reinterpretations to restore diversity and women's independence from these various restrictions.
