NATO Secretary General Urges Russia To Allow IAEA To Inspect Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
JAKARTA - Secretary General of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Jens Stoltenberg, asked Russia to approve the inspection of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) in Ukraine.
"It is urgent to allow inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to ensure the withdrawal of all Russian troops," Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels, quoted from Daily Sabah August 18.
"The seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by Russian forces poses a serious threat to the safety and security of this facility," Stoltenberg said.
"(It) increases the risk of a nuclear accident or incident, endangering the population of Ukraine, neighboring countries and the international community," he said.
It is known, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for military activities around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine to be stopped, as quoted by Reuters.
He urged the withdrawal of military personnel and equipment and that no more troops or equipment be deployed. He called on Russia and Ukraine not to target the plant or the surrounding area.
