Club World Cup Postponed To February 2021
JAKARTA - The Club World Cup, which was originally scheduled to take place in December 2020 in Doha, Qatar, has been postponed to February 1-11 2021, organizers announced on the official FIFA website on Tuesday.
This edition will be the last time the Club World Cup will be held in the old format.
The participants are champions at the continental level with Bayern Munich as champions of the 2019/20 Champions League as the first team to qualify as participants.
Last season Liverpool won the Club World Cup by defeating Brazilian club Copa Libertadores winners, Flamengo, in the final.
FIFA did not disclose whether supporters would be allowed to watch live but stated that "in line with the FIFA International Match Protocol, FIFA and the host country will provide health and safety guidance to all parties involved."
The new format for the Club World Cup involving 24 teams is planned for the summer of 2021 in China.
But the postponement of EURO 2020 and Copa America 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic has put those plans on hold.
