This Is The Reason The Story Of Yumi And The Pig In The Yumi's Cells Series Is Different From The Comics

JAKARTA - The Yumi's Cells 2 series has succeeded in attracting the audience. This drama is about Yumi, a single woman in her 30s whose movements are controlled by a different cell. Thanks to the help of his cell, which is depicted like an animated character, he goes through life in search of happiness in his personal life, love and work.

After the first season aired last September, the second season followed and ended recently. In the second season, Yumi has a romantic relationship with her work colleague, Babi (Park Jin-young), and takes on a new profession as a writer. The second season was a success on the Tving streaming platform and was popular overseas, streaming in 160 regions via Rakuten Viki's global platform.

The creators of the drama Yumi's Cells, director Lee Sang-yeob along with writers Kim Kyung-ran and Song- are happy with the success of the series.

"It's great that so many people responded to (the series). I could feel the (popularity) was stronger in season two than in season one. We talked about how overseas audiences might also like it when we did animation. And we're happy to hear someone praise it. ," Kim said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 3.

"As the title says 'Yumi's Cells', I want to convey the message that Yumi's life belongs to her. Even though she's been through a lot, I want to encourage her that 'you may make mistakes and have regrets but you're fine'. myself or the audience," he continued.

Adapting popular comics has its pros and cons. According to Song, the best thing is that he has amazing material to adapt to. On the other hand, the comic is so popular that there is no surprise factor.

The first season revolved around bringing cells to life and turning web comics into live action, while the second season focused on developing the original plot of Yumi and Babi's love story.

In the comic version, the two break up because Babi is attracted to another woman. However, the story is slightly changed in the drama version. The infidelity part is smoothed over and there's more melodrama between Yumi and Babi, as the couple tries to mend a fractured relationship.

"I think it will be boring to use the same pattern for the second season. Since Pig is hated by many fans (web comics), I think viewers will feel there is nothing to look forward to in season two," said Song.

"So we made a lot of changes in the story to give hope that (Yumi and Babi) might last forever."

The creators say that the comic artist Lee Dong-geun who made "Yumi's Cells" gave them creative freedom in adapting the story.

"Creator Lee Dong-geon left it completely to us, so we could work smoothly. Most of the time we asked for approval on Pig because it changes the layers of the story," said Song.

"We asked if we could change Babi and Yumi's ending for serial viewers and Lee said, 'I don't mind. You can do whatever you want.'

The plot of the comic version continues after Yumi and Babi break up, where Yumi hones her skills as a writer and finally meets a new editor named Soon-rok who eventually becomes her life partner. When asked if the third season will tell the same plot as the comics, the director said nothing has been decided yet.

"There's not much to say because nothing has been decided yet. But first the actors and the production team have to rest because we've been working on this series for a long time," he said.

"We joked that we should have (a big star) like Timothee Chalamet for a new character, because Ahn Bo-hyun has done well in the first season and Park Jin-young for the second."
