The Murder Accusations That Almost Destroyed Canelo's Boxing Career When He Was 23
JAKARTA - Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez once got into trouble when he was accused of murder. Luckily, he was able to prove his innocence.
Canelo is one of the most prominent boxers in the world and his name carries a lot of weight in the sport. However, when he was 23 years old, things could have been very different for him.
Quoted from Marca, Wednesday, at the turn of the year 2013 to 2014, Canelo was accused of being partly responsible for the death of his sparring partner Javier Jauregui. At that time, the boxer from Guadalajara had been a professional boxer for five years and was still unbeaten.
His wins already marked him as a boxer of talent at the age of 23 and he has a lucrative exclusive contract with Mexican television station Televisa.
However, some media speculated, Canelo beat Jauregui during a training session which saw him end up in hospital and diagnosed with a stroke which later led to death.
The TV show y Novelas on the Televisa network reported that Jauregui's stroke was caused by a blow from Canelo during one of his training sessions. Reportedly, the sparring practice was overkill and the 40-year-old took a lot of punches from Canelo.
The same event brought Jauregui's widow to speak, and she refuted the claims and asserted that her husband's death was due to a "congenital condition called a brain aneurysm".
Canelo was so outraged by the murder claims that he cut ties with Televisa. In the end, he was not tried for involuntary manslaughter and was able to focus on remaining in the boxing elite.
