US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Expected To Keep Visiting Taiwan, Ministry Of Foreign Affairs: Chinese Army Will Not Stand Still
JAKARTA - Chinese authorities will take effective power measures if US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday.
"If Pelosi visits Taiwan, this will be a major interference in China's domestic policy and will lead to very serious consequences," he explained during a briefing to reporters.
"The Chinese People's Liberation Army will not sit idly by and do nothing," he added.
According to the diplomat, Pelosi's visit to Taiwan will destabilize the situation in the Taiwan Strait, dealing a blow to Sino-US relations.
"China will definitely take firm and effective action," he stressed.
Meanwhile, according to CNN, Pelosi is expected to visit Taiwan as part of her tour of Asia, according to a senior Taiwan government official and a US official, despite warnings from Biden administration officials, who are concerned about China's response to the high-level visit.
The visit was not included in Pelosi's public itinerary, a politician from the Democratic Party. However, the Taiwanese official added that she (Pelosi) was expected to stay in Taiwan overnight, although it was not clear exactly when Pelosi would land in Taipei.
The US official added that the Department of Defense is working around the clock to monitor China's every move in the region and secure plans to keep it safe.
