Vice President Ma'ruf Amin Receives Minutes Of Muslims For Sustainable Indonesia

JAKARTA - A number of collaborators of the Congress of Muslims for Sustainable Indonesia read and handed over 7 minutes, as a guide in finding solutions to climate change, to Vice President Ma'ruf Amin at the Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, today.

Vice President Ma'ruf welcomed the Minutes of Islam for Sustainable Indonesia and asked the unity of the people to anticipate climate change.

The collaborators who read the treatises were the initiators and organizers of the Muslim Congress for Sustainable Indonesia, which consisted of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the Environmental Council (MLH) of PP Muhammadiyah, the Institute for Disaster Management and Climate Change (LPBI) and the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board. "The issues raised at this congress, namely the environment and climate change, have become crucial issues at the local, national and global levels, so that all parties are required to participate in efforts to overcome the impacts caused by climate change," said Vice President Ma'ruf in his remarks. after receiving the minutes quoted from Antara, Jakarta, Friday, July 29.

The Vice President added that the phenomenon of climate change such as global warming cannot be separated from the actions of humans themselves who are negligent in interacting with the natural environment. This also causes hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and droughts.

The Vice President hopes that with international commitment and collaboration, efforts to tackle climate change can run better.

The vice president also emphasized the teachings in Islam that forbid humans from doing destruction on the earth, as in the Al-Quran Al-A'raf verse 56, "Do not do damage on earth after it is properly regulated".

"I urge religious leaders and Muslims to be expected to play an active role in conveying issues related to environmental damage. I hope that the Muslim Congress for Sustainable Indonesia can produce recommendations and concrete follow-up actions in addressing climate change, so that later it becomes a reflection of Islam as a the religion of rahmatan lil 'alamin," he said.

The Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, Nasaruddin Umar, emphasized the need for a mosque to be a place to instill environmental awareness in the people. He gave an example of the Istiqlal Mosque which has received a certificate of Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) from the International Finance Corporation through the IFC Country Manager.

"This is very important. There is no way we can green the environment if people's minds and hearts are not green. The function of the mosque is how to green the mind and heart, as well as the environment," said Nasaruddin Umar.
