Tuesday's Rupiah Closed Dropped 30 Points To Rp13,669 Per US Dollar

JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate closed lower on Tuesday, January 21. The rupiah exchange rate weakened 30 points or 0.22 percent at the level of Rp13,669 per US dollar.

Head of Research at Monex Investindo Futures, Ariston Tjendra, said the market was getting negative sentiment from the potential slowdown in global economic growth as projected by the IMF.

"Coupled with the fall in Asian and European stock indices today due to market concerns over the issue of the corona virus outbreak in China which has pushed market players out of risky assets into safe assets," Ariston told VOI, Tuesday, January 21.

Not only the rupiah, a number of other Asian currencies also weakened against the US dollar. Starting from the Taiwan dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Malaysian ringgit to Thai baht.

A series of Asian currencies have indeed fallen on the expectations of the US dollar today. The South Korean won even weakened 0.78 percent against the US dollar. On the other hand, the Japanese yen was still able to strengthen 0.17 percent against the US dollar.
