Commonwealth Organizers Prepare 150K Condoms For Athletes, Promotion Of Safe Sex
JAKARTA - The organizers of the 2022 Commonwealth Games have prepared as many as 150 thousand condoms free of charge for contestants. The supply of these condoms is more than what was distributed to athletes at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
This step as part of efforts to promote safe sex. The number of condoms will be distributed to a total of 6,500 athletes during 12 competition days from 28 July to 8 August 2022. Thus, per athlete will receive at least 23 prophylaxis.
"There was an expectation of 50,000 condoms across the three Commonwealth Games sites, so a total of 150,000," said Dr Karl Beese, who is Birmingham City Council commissioning manager for adult public health services.
"So there won't be any problems in terms of supply and we will be meeting in the near future with Pam Venning who is the chief medical officer in charge of the Commonwealth Games from to discuss that issue."
"So it's all being worked on but I have to admit when they say 'can we have 150,000 condoms?' It allows you to understand the extent of this."
Currently the organizers are trying to bring sponsorship of contraceptives. At least there are several potential sponsors who have been invited to discuss the issue.
The number of contraceptives to be administered was announced at a meeting of the Birmingham City Council health and social review and oversight committee this week.
Later the condoms will be distributed in three separate places, namely the NEC Hotel campus, the University of Birmingham student hall and the University of Warwick. These places are used as athletes' lodgings during events.
