Madiun PUPR Office Builds 2 New Sluice Gates To Prevent Floods

MADIUN - The Public Works and Public Housing Agency (PUPR) of Madiun City, East Java, built two new floodgates in the 2022 Fiscal Year to prevent hydrometeorological disasters, one of which was flooding.

"The construction of the sluice gate was carried out because the outlet or the old floodgate from the Solo River Basin Center (BBWS) was considered too small," said the Head of Water Resources Management (PSDA) of the Madiun City DPUPR, Suyanto, as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, July 21.

According to him, if there is high rainfall which causes the water flow to increase, the old floodgates cannot accommodate, so that water overflows into residential areas and causes flooding.

"The old one has a diameter of 1 x 1 meter. We made it again with a size of 2 x 2 meters. The two floodgates were built on the Jalan Pancasila channel in Nambangan Lor Village and Jalan Muh Nur in Demangan Village," he said.

Suyanto said the floodgate construction project at Jalan Pancasila was started in early July 2022, with a budget of around Rp. 1.5 billion. It ensures that it will not change the original shape of the old floodgate. Instead, a new floodgate will be built next to it.

Meanwhile, a budget of Rp1.7 billion is provided to complete the existing project on Jalan Muh Nur. Both projects are targeted for completion in early November.

Suyanto hopes that the addition of the floodgates at the Jalan Muh Nur location can control the overflow of water in the Demangan, Kuncen and Josenan Villages.

Meanwhile, the floodgates in the Pancasila channel are for water control in Pandean, Nambangan Lor and Nambangan Kidul Villages.

Disaster anticipation continues to be mapped by the Madiun City Government in responding to the issue of climate change and environmental damage, the impact of which can trigger extreme weather.

The extreme weather can cause hydrometeorological natural disasters, such as tropical cyclones, floods, landslides, cyclones, high sea waves and others, as stated by the BMKG.
