Maradona Must Now Be Anesthetized To Recover From Alcoholism
JAKARTA - Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona was sedated by doctors to help him deal with withdrawal syndrome. This is part of Maradona's recovery from alcohol addiction.
Withdrawal syndrome is a series of physical and psychological symptoms experienced after a person quits alcohol dependence. Maradona's personal doctor, Alfredo Cahe, explained that Maradona's condition still had to be treated.
Maradona previously underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday, November 3 for a subdural hematoma or blood clot in the brain.
"He has to undergo treatment to stop drinking alcohol and all of his family agree that the current Diego is out of control," Cahe told TyC Sports, the Argentine television channel, quoted by Reuters, Saturday, November 7.
"We must take the bull by the horns."
"He's got a liver problem, a cardiovascular problem. His brain on the one hand, liver on the other, his stomach. These are things. We need to clean Diego and then we'll see. He's still a complicated patient."
Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986 and is considered one of the greatest players of all time. In retirement, Maradona had frequent bleeding in the hospital over the years.
Many of his illnesses were caused by Maradona's irregular lifestyle. The 60-year-old former Barcelona, Napoli and Boca Juniors player also nagged to leave the Buenos Aires clinic where he was operated on.
But Cahe said Maradona was not fit to be alone. "What Diego's future looks like is a mystery and it worries me he can't come home like this," said Cahe, who has worked with the recalcitrant star for decades.
Maradona needs to be in a place "where he has permanent help," Cahe added. Maradona is a former coach of the Argentina national team and currently the manager of the first division club Gimnasia y Esgrima.
He looked weak and dull in his final public appearance before the operation, ahead of his club's match against the Patronato. Maradona received a plaque and a cake to mark his 60th birthday but did not hold out for the match and concerns over his health grew.
