Sony Launches PlayStation Stars Program To Get Special Digital Collections, But Not NFT

JAKARTA - Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will launch a new free PlayStation Stars loyalty program for PlayStation players later this year.

Sony says all PlayStation Stars members will have the opportunity to earn loyalty points which can then be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds and certain PlayStation Store products.

"As an added benefit, PlayStation Plus members registered with PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on the PlayStation Store," explains Grace Chen, Vice President, Network Advertising, Loyalty & Licensed Merchandise at Sony.

In addition to earning points, as part of PlayStation Stars, Sony will also be launching various new types of prizes called digital collectibles, from their products and franchises.

The digital collection offered by Sony does sound like NFT is buzzing lately, but Sony doesn't mention anything related to blockchain and NFT in its blog post.

That was also made clear when the company did an interview with The Washington Post, where the company said "it doesn't leverage blockchain technology and definitely isn't NFT."

Instead, Sony describes it as a digital representation of the things PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from the game.

"There will always be new collectibles to acquire, extremely rare collectibles to fight for, or something surprising to collect just for fun," Chen continued.

So, this collection is like a gift for the players. This item cannot be obtained by direct purchase, players must earn key loyalty points through challenges, such as monthly challenges that require players to play any game to earn rewards.

Currently, Sony is doing some initial testing of PlayStation Stars before rolling it out gradually to the public. Sony also promises the PlayStation Stars program will continue to grow from time to time.
