Arrested For Rape Case, Premier League Player Doesn't Get Suspension From Club
JAKARTA - One of the Premier League players who was arrested on suspicion of raping a 20-year-old woman will not be suspended from her club.
The player, who has not been named on legal grounds, was arrested earlier this month. The club said he would not be suspended as he was still able to "fulfill his work commitments".
"We are aware of the allegations which are currently the subject of a police investigation," the club told The Athletic, quoted by the Daily Star.
"We have confirmed that the player denies the allegations and is under police bail awaiting the results of their investigation. No charges have been filed and the player is able to fulfill his professional commitments including permitted travel."
The 29-year-old player was arrested in Barnet, North London, on Monday, 7 July. He himself has even confirmed that the club he is defending is not suspended.
Police later arrested him again on suspicion of carrying out two other attacks on a different woman. However, he denied the accusations leveled against him.
"We take our commitments and responsibilities seriously and have followed our security policies and procedures," the club said.
"We will consider this matter carefully and will review it further if circumstances change," they added.
The decision taken by this club contrasts with the policies of other clubs in treating their players for similar cases.
Manchester United, for example, immediately suspended Mason Greenwood following his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault.
Another club suspended a player after being arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing children.
Then, another example is Manchester City's immediate suspension of Benjamin Mendy, who has denied nine sexual assaults including allegations of raping seven women.
