Shifting Apple, Xiaomi Will Grow To Be The Largest Smartphone Manufacturer In Q3 2020

JAKARTA - Xiaomi, the smartphone manufacturer from China, was ranked third as a big brand in the third quarter of 2020. The report was taken from three research and data analysis institutions, namely IDC, Counterpoint and Canalys.

Launching TechCrunch, according to Counterpoint's report, Xiaomi's performance for the smartphone market in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, is better than other competitors. This is also coupled with the massive expansion carried out by Xiaomi in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

"For Xiaomi, this achievement cannot be separated from Mi Fans in Indonesia who provide endless support. In the midst of conditions like now, we continue to build optimism by presenting various products and innovations from smartphones and smart devices," said Country Director Xiaomi Indonesia Alvin Tse, in a written statement, Monday, November 2.

In this quarter, Xiaomi recorded the largest smartphone shipment with 46.2 million units. Xiaomi managed to surpass Apple with a 13.1 percent market share based on a report from IDC, citing 42 percent growth compared to Q3 2019.

This performance was mostly contributed by the recovering Indian market as well as the stronger market in China. In India, Xiaomi's production capacity had recovered to a level of 85 percent before the COVID-19 pandemic occurred.

Meanwhile, a report from Canalys said the easing of restrictions on places of business for human movement caused the number of shipments of smart phones to drop by only 1 percent compared to Q3 2019.

This quarter, Xiaomi was aggressive in presenting smartphones in large numbers to fill the void caused by lower production from other brands. In the European market, Xiaomi grew by 88 percent.

Based on the financial statements of Semester I 2020, Xiaomi recorded revenues of 103.24 billion renminbi and net profit of 5.67 billion renminbi.

For the Indonesian market, Canalys also said that Xiaomi controlled the market share of smart audio products in Indonesia by 44.2 percent based on research published in July 2020.
