The Canadian national team made their first and only appearance at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986, where they finished last in their group after suffering three defeats. However, they will be competing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 36 years in Qatar in 2022.

The ticket to Qatar was obtained by the Canadian national team after they beat Jamaica 4-0 at BMO Field, Toronto, on March 27, 2022. That victory means Canada is guaranteed to finish in one of the top three places in the final phase of the CONCACAF qualifying zone.

In the match against Jamaica Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan brought Canada 2-0 up in the first half. Meanwhile, the next two goals were each scored by Junior Hoilett and an own goal by Adrian Mariappa. With the addition of three points, Canada sat at the top of the Concacaf qualifying standings.
