Germany at the 1950 World Cup

West Germany, captained by Fritz Walter met Turkey, Yugoslavia and Austria in the 1954 World Cup. Against favorites Hungary in the group stage and lost 3-8. West Germany met again with Hungary's "Mighty Magyar" in the final. Hungary are unbeaten for 32 matches in a row. West Germany finally won 3-2 through goals scored by Helmut Rahn. The success was called the "Bern Miracle" (Das Wunder von Bern).

1974

As hosts of the 1974 World Cup, they won their second World Cup by beating the Netherlands 2-1 in the final in Munich. The first group stage featured a politically charged match as West Germany played a match against East Germany. East Germany won 1-0. West Germany advanced to the final against a Dutch team led by Johan Cruijff and his "Total Football". The Netherlands took the lead through a penalty kick. However, West Germany equalized through a Paul Breitner penalty, and won it with Gerd Müller's perfect finish soon after.

1990

At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, West Germany won their third World Cup title, in an unprecedented third successive final appearance. Captained by Lothar Matthäus, they beat Yugoslavia (4–1), UAE (5–1), Netherlands (2–1), Czechoslovakia (1–0) and England (1–1, 4–3 on penalties) en route to the 1986 final rematch against Argentina in the Italian capital, Rome.

West Germany won 1-0, thanks to a single penalty goal scored in the 85th minute by Andreas Brehme. Franz Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as captain of the national team in 1974, became the first person to win the World Cup as captain and manager, and the second to win as player and manager (after Brazil's Mario Zagallo).

2014

The 2014 World Cup final was held at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on July 13, and was billed as a duel between the world's best player (Lionel Messi) and the world's best team (Germany). Mario Götze's 113th minute goal helped Germany beat Argentina 1-0 while becoming the first European team to win the World Cup in the Americas and the second European team to win the title outside Europe.

Germany at the 2022 World Cup

Germany became the first team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup finals through qualifying. Der Panzer qualified after rolling North Macedonia four goals without reply on Tuesday 11 October 2021. This victory made Germany collect 21 points from eight matches. Der Panzer is confirmed to be the winner of Group J because their points cannot be overtaken by Romania, who at that time only got 13 points with two games remaining.
