Applying Eucalyptus Oil On Masks: Has The Potential To Interfere With The Respiratory System
JAKARTA - Applying eucalyptus oil or essential oil with a certain aroma to the mask does not have any effect because there is no scientific data that says that eucalyptus oil can kill the new corona virus.
"Not for good health, what is there is (smearing on masks) to make sure we can still smell," said sports medicine specialist Michael Triangto, quoted from Antara, Saturday, October 31.
However, COVID-19 does not always cause symptoms of a loss of the ability to smell. In people without symptoms, the body condition feels fine even though and there are no specific symptoms.
Therefore, smearing eucalyptus oil on masks is not a guarantee that users will definitely be protected from the new corona virus.
Resident of Sports Medicine Freddy Ferdian stated that essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint function as aromatherapy to refresh and increase concentration, but not to prevent or treat COVID-19.
"The use of this oil is also individual because some people who are sensitive or allergic to certain oils can experience dizziness, headaches, tightness and itching when inhaling," explained Freddy.
Meanwhile, Doctor Muliadi Limanjaya, General Physician at Pondok Indah Bintaro Jaya Hospital, said he did not recommend this.
"The use of certain oils in masks, apart from causing disturbances in the respiratory system due to the intense aroma, can also close the pores or filtration holes on the masks, so they are not recommended," said Muliadi.
