Sam Smith Praises Lady Gaga As LGBT + Protective Angel

JAKARTA - Sam Smith has once again proven that Lady Gaga is the guardian angel of the LGBT + community.

In an episode of Vogue's Beauty Secrets web series on Tuesday, October 27, the singer revealed that one of the reasons she appears non-binary is because she feels Gaga's music is a "form of protection" from bullies.

"I was 15 years old when The Fame album was released and I was obsessed with Lady Gaga," mused Smith.

“For me, he gave me full permission to be myself and was proud of my queer. It was a form of expression, but strangely it was also a form of protection.

"It's like a way of saying to homophobes and bullies, 'Get away from me', because I'm confident and strong in my queer."

During a make-up tutorial session, Smith reflected on how important beauty is to their gender expression. "When I hit 14, 15, I started questioning my gender and started really wanting to express myself in a way I felt like I said survival was a form of," she said.

"Makeup for me is the way to do that."

She described how she felt "very abandoned" when their female friends visited the makeup shop: "I was like, this shop is not for me, makeup is not for me."

But Smith's friend helped her realize that "make-up is for me, and no matter what gender you are, it's a form of expression and it feels good. It's a poster of your life, every day you meet people."

"To have that time and use that time every day to touch your face and put something on your face, I think that's very special," added Smith.

After revealing herself to be non-binary, says Smith, her passion for makeup resurfaced.
