US To Propose Abraham Accords For Palestine

JAKARTA - The United States (US) government has stated that it will propose the Abraham Accords, or an agreement to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab countries. This will also benefit Palestine.

This was conveyed by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during a visit to Indonesia and his meeting with the Ansor Youth Movement in Jakarta. He said the Middle East peace plan was proposed by President Donald Trump to create a better life for everyone in the region, including Palestinians.

"What we have done with the President's vision of peace - and the Abraham Accords included in it - increases the capacity of the Palestinian people to have a state, in the way that we laid out on that vision of peace," Pompeo said, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, 29. October.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain are two Arab countries that signed the Abraham Accords joint declaration with Israel, which was bridged by the US, on 15 September 2020.

The normalization of official Israel-UAE and Israel-Bahrain relations has received mixed responses, with critics seeing it as a deal that only benefits Israel and increasingly leaves Palestine.

Since the plan to normalize relations was announced in August 2020, Palestine itself has taken a stern stance, expressing denial and criticism. Palestinians call the agreement "a betrayal of the struggle of the Palestinian people."

However, Israel and the US continue to run political lobbying with other Arab countries. On October 23, 2020, Sudan became the third Arab country to agree to re-establish diplomatic relations with Israel - and Trump removed Sudan from the list of countries supporting terrorism.

According to Pompeo, his party carried out the Middle East peace plan based on the idea of a two-state solution, namely Palestine and Israel living side by side with each other.

"We believe that [...] the Palestinian people must enter into the conversation (about this peace, red) in order to bring about a good outcome for them. [...] We present real economic benefits and assistance, which we think are fundamental to have discussions, "said Pompeo.

"We also feel that the Abraham Accords created the conditions in which Arab countries now recognize that Israel has the right to exist, and we hope the Palestinians will acknowledge that in the same way so that later we can start these discussions," he said. he.
