A Week Of Release, Hailey Bieber's Skincare Is Being Sued By Rhode Brand
JAKARTA - A week since its release, Hailey Bieber's skincare brand - Rhode - has received a lawsuit. He was called a trademark infringement by a fashion brand with the same name.
On June 15, Hailey Bieber inaugurated a skincare brand called Rhode. It turns out that a fashion brand called Rhode has had that name since 2014.
Launching Page Six, Rhode's legal side claimed Hailey Bieber tried to get the trademark from the owners of Rhode fashion brands: Purna Khatau and Phoebe Vickers in 2018.
Even though Purna and Phoebe refused, Hailey Bieber continued the process of creating a skincare brand with the name Rhode. It is known that Rhode is Hailey Bieber's middle name.
"He (Hailey Bieber) still does this even though he knows Rhode and the trademark," said Lisa T. Simpson, Rhode's litigation counsellor today, Wednesday, June 22.
“This is an unfortunate situation. We, of course, understand Hailey wants to use a middle name for her brand but the law is clear: you can't create confusion just because you want to use your name."
Simpson explained, what Hailey Bieber did was detrimental to the two Rhode brand owners who are a minority.
In a different statement, the two owners of the Rhode fashion brand felt compelled to sue the Hailey brand in order to keep their business.
“We are a young and growing company, and we can't fight a celebrity like Hailey who uses our company name to sell similar products,” they said.
“Hailey has the power to be a star and a business. He can choose the brand for his company. We only have a brand that we build ourselves," he continued.
It's no new secret that Hailey Bieber intends to make a business. In 2019, she had applied for a trademark under the name Bieber Beauty but was rejected because Bieber said that it had been registered in the name of Justin Bieber, her husband.
Then, Hailey Bieber proposed the name Rhode in 2018 but was rejected because in 2014, there was already a fashion brand with the same name founded by Purna and Phoebe. Until now, Hailey Bieber himself has not responded to the lawsuit submitted by the founder of Rhode.
