Senegal's defeat in the 2002 African Cup of Nations was due to his missed penalty. That's why he feels indebted to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal and has paid off that debt.

Star man Sadio Mane scored the winner with a penalty kick to seal Senegal's 4-2 victory on penalties after 120 minutes of a 0-0 draw against Egypt in the final in Yaounde in early February 2022.

The victory ended a history of stifling defeats. In 2002 Senegal narrowly missed out on becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals after losing to Turkey in extra time. That year they also lost in the African Cup of Nations final.

At the 2018 World Cup they were eliminated from the group stage because of a new rule that punished Senegal for getting more yellow cards than Japan, which was their rival in the group stage.

star player

Sadio Mané was part of the Senegal team at the 2012 Olympic tournament, and started every game as they progressed through Group A as runners-up to Great Britain before losing 2-4 after extra time in the quarter-finals to then-champions Mexico.

In May 2018, Mané was named in Senegal's 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He scored the opening goal in a 2-2 draw against Japan in the group stage. Mané started all three of Senegal's group games as they were eliminated after the first stage, finishing below Japan on fair play points.

At the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Mané starred for Senegal as they won the competition for the first time. In the final against Egypt – a match which saw him face Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah – Mané missed a penalty in the 7th minute, but then scored the winner in the shootout.

In addition to scoring the decisive kick to win the trophy, Mané scored three goals and provided two assists before the final, and was named the best player of the tournament. In the third round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, he also scored the winning goal in the penalty shootout against Egypt after a 1-1 draw on aggregate, to qualify his country for the 2022 World Cup.

On 4 June 2022, Mané scored a hat-trick in a 3–1 win against Benin in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, to become Senegal's all-time leading goalscorer with 32 goals, surpassing Henri Camara. Three days later, in the match against Rwanda, Sane increased his goal tally to 33.
