Building Fire Due To Cigarette Butts, This Is The AGO's Response

JAKARTA - The Attorney General's Office (Kejagung) is reluctant to comment on the investigation into the building fire case which is said to have been caused by the burning coals of construction workers' cigarettes dumped in the trash.

Head of the Legal Information Center of the Attorney General's Office, Hari Setiyono, said that the investigation process was fully handed over to Bareskrim Polri.

"So because 8 suspects have been announced by the National Police Headquarters or Bareskrim Polri, the next development is of course the investigating prosecutors are waiting for the case files," Hari told reporters, Monday, October 26.

Hari only wanted to comment on the renovation of the Attorney General's Building. According to Hari, the room renovation of the Personnel Bureau hall was only the addition of accessories. Thus, it does not require a permit and violates the rules of the Culture and Tourism Office.

"The cultural heritage building does not change its shape, it only adds accessories, it only provides attachments, for example putting on blinds wallpaper, it does not change its shape, it doesn't need permission either," he explained.

Previously, Bareskrim Porli said the fire that burned the AGO building came from cigarette coals that were dumped by construction workers into polybags.

Initially, the suspects who renovated the Personnel Bureau hall collected the rubbish from their work. Then, the garbage is put into three polybags or large plastic bags. Including a cigarette tip that is probably still slightly lit.

Then the suspects left the hall. They came down from the 6th floor of the AGO building.

With the embers in the polybag, it burns other rubbish. A large fire appeared and burned the objects around it.

In the end, an even bigger fire burned several parts of the AGO building.

In this case the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit named eight suspects. Five of them are construction workers.

The five construction workers have the initials T, H, S, K, and IS. They were named suspects for violating the no smoking rule in the personnel bureau hall.

While the other three namely, UAM as the foreman, R who is the Director of PT ARM and the Commitment Making Officer (PPK) of the Attorney General's Office, NH.

The determination of the suspect against UAM was reasoned because they did not supervise the five craftsmen while they were working. Meanwhile, R and NH were named suspects for making an agreement to use a dash cleaner cleaning fluid which is said to accelerate the combustion process.

The suspects were charged under Article 188 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 55 and Article 56 of the Criminal Code with the threat of 5 years in prison.
