The Inmates Of The Palembang Detention Center Are Trained To Process Garbage For Life Provisions When Freed From Prison

JAKARTA - Residents of the Class I Penitentiary (WBP) of the State Detention Center (Rutan) in Palembang, South Sumatra are trained to process waste into goods that have economic value for their livelihood if they are finally released.

The training was initially given to 15 prisoners/inmates who were previously selected by the instructor of the "Eco Green House Palembang" Joint Business Group, said Head of Class I Palembang Detention Center Bistok Sitongkir, in Palembang, Tuesday, June 14.

The waste management training which took place inside the detention center was carried out from 8 June 2022 and will be continued on 21-22 June.

The 15 training participants will be the waste bank team at the Palembang Rutan Rutan. They will collect garbage from the korlap in each residential block under the guidance of the instructor of the Joint Business Group Chair "Eco Green House Palembang" Hanar Dono.

The training activity was held in collaboration with the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights with PT Pertamina International Refinery Unit III Plaju Refinery (Pertamina Plaju Refinery) through the Corporate Social Responsibility (TJSL/CSR) program, said the Head of the Bistok Detention Center.

While Area Manager Communication, Relations & CSR of Pertamina Refinery Plaju Siti Rachmi Indahsari added, the holding of this activity was to support the implementation of the 11th 'Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs)' which is to make cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

In addition, it also aims to support the 12th SDGs, namely ensuring sustainable production and consumption patterns related to waste management.

"We are working with the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office to increase capacity for the community and this is a social and environmental responsibility for Pertamina," said Rachmi.

The coordinator of activities from the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of South Sumatra Joni Ihsan explained that the training was aimed at providing waste bank processing skills to WBP as provisions for integration into the community.

Inorganic waste will be sold, while organic waste will be used as feed for maggot caterpillar cultivation.

The processing of inorganic and organic waste is expected to provide economic benefits to WBP and reduce the amount of waste that is disposed of outside the Palembang Rutan.

"Through the waste processing, hopefully the Palembang Rutan will get the title of a green institution," said Joni Ihsan, who is also the head of the South Sumatra Community Guidance Association.

The Head of the Regional Office of the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Harun Sulianto, thanked and appreciated the real role of the Pertamina International Refinery Unit III Plaju Refinery for its synergy in fostering WBP in waste processing.

It is hoped that this beneficial collaboration for the WBP and the environment can be continued and developed in 19 other correctional institutions and detention centers in the South Sumatra region, Harun said.
