Polestar 3 First Electric Sport Utility Vehicle Produced In The US

JAKARTA - The Polestar 3, the third vehicle to be appropriately named from the electric performance brand, will be officially announced in October 2022. It will be Polestar's first sports utility vehicle and the first to be made in the US.

The Polestar 3 marks Polestar's attempt to break into the highly competitive and highly profitable SUV market in the US. When this product comes out, it will fall into the premium category, putting it in competition with EVs like the Tesla Model X, Audi E-tron, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Rivian R1S, and Fisker Ocean.

The Polestar will be assembled at Volvo's factory in Charleston, South Carolina, making it the company's first electric car to be built on US soil.

At launch, the Polestar 3 will sport a dual motor drivetrain and a large battery, with a target range of over 372 miles (600 km). Apart from being a higher ride vehicle than the Polestar 2 fastback sedan, the Polestar 3 will also include a partially autonomous drive system for road driving.

The system was made possible thanks to the inclusion of lidar sensors from suppliers Luminar, which also provides components for hands-free road driving to Volvo, and Nvidia, which will provide the on-board computing hardware.

Volvo, which co-owns Polestar and along with its parent company Geely, have said that they will be rolling out a hands-free highway driving feature as part of the next major platform update, Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2), which will arrive for its next edition, Generation XC90 SUV and Polestar 3 in 2022.

Polestar recently announced plans to go public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. The merger is expected to be completed “in the first half of 2022,” after which Polestar will go public.
