Coordinating Minister For Political, Legal And Security Affairs: Don't Disturb The Independence Of The Police With Political Messages

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD asked the independence and precision (predictiveness, responsibility, and fair transparency) of the Police not to be interfered with by political interests.

"I always ask, do not interfere with the independence of the Police. Police precision should not be interfered with by political messages. No. If done, everything can be damaged; because politics upholds the function of democracy, while the Police has a nomocratic function," Mahfud said in a written statement quoted Between, Tuesday, June 7th.

This was conveyed by Mahfud when he was a resource person at the Technical Working Meeting (Rakernis) of the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Mahfud said that the public had good expectations of the Polri institution, which was directly proportional to the results of the public satisfaction survey with the Polri. To maintain this good hope, he assessed that the independence and precision of the Police must continue to be optimized.

"We have good expectations and this must be encouraged," he said.

Mahfud also explained the results of a survey of public satisfaction with the Police who occupy a good position. Nevertheless, he reminded all ranks of the National Police that the results of the survey were volatile and depended on changes in performance.

"Based on the survey results, the public's trust and satisfaction with the National Police is in a good position. In the Kompas R&D survey from 17 to 30 January 2022, public satisfaction with the Government reached 73.9 percent, satisfaction with the Political, Legal and Security Affairs sector reached 77.6 percent, and the legal sector reached 69 percent. It is undeniable that the National Police made a major contribution to this achievement," he said.

At the end of his speech, Mahfud asked the National Police to continue to work professionally and to close loopholes that could be exploited to destroy the country through proxy attacks.

"We accommodate criticism, but remain professional, apply Precision, which is predictive or able to predict situations and events, so that we can take anticipatory and preventive steps. Next, responsibility, which is to step proactively, not silent, able to take advantage of opportunities, be critical and serve," he explained.

"Lastly, it is transparent, open, and responsible, as well as accepting suggestions and criticisms as part of the task with the National Police," said Mahfud.
