Canelo Alvarez Accepts New Threat, Ryan Garcia Says He's Better And Wants To Be The Best Cross-Division Boxer
JAKARTA - Ryan Garcia has assured that he will make the leap as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter.
He is determined to step up to Saul Canelo Alvarez if he manages to set up a fight against Gervonta Davis and beat him.
"Beyond Canelo, above all. I swear to you. I promise you. That's how it will be. It will be monumental," said the Mexican-American boxer in an interview with Sports Illustrated, Tuesday, June 7.
For now, on July 16, Ryan Garcia will face Javier Fortuna in Los Angeles, California.
Previously, he easily defeated Emmanuel Tagoe on April 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, by unanimous decisions 119-108, 118-109 and 119-108.
For several years, Garcia had been trying to arrange a fight against Gervonta Davis and the two had even agreed to go head-to-head.
However, the fight fell through when "King Ryan" began negotiating with Manny Pacquiao. However, the Mexican-American boxer is still looking for that fight.
Meanwhile, Oscar de la Hoya, who was Canelo Alvarez's promoter for nearly a decade and now works with Garcia, has ensured that his boxer is ready to replace him on the throne as the all-time great.
"I feel like I have a unique perspective after going through what I've been through," De La Hoya told Bleacher Report.
"I can tell a fighter what to do and what not to do, what works and what doesn't."
"When you tell him something, he listens. He's a 23-year-old who listens to what you have to say, pays attention to it and wants to learn. It's a valuable commodity. He listens to me. He values what we say.
The Golden Boy then revealed, the duel between Gracia vs Gervonta could happen in the next 12 months.
