Due To Potential Corrosion Of Braking System Mercedes Recalls 1 Million Cars From 2004 To 2015

JAKARTA – Known as a car manufacturer that prioritizes engine perfection and safety, Mercedes-Benz is now facing a problem. The German automaker announced it will soon recall nearly one million older model vehicles worldwide due to potential problems related to the braking system.

Germany's federal transport authority (KBA) said the recall affected cars made between 2004 and 2015 of the ML and GL SUV series, as well as the R-Class luxury minivan.

According to the KBA, a total of 993,407 vehicles were recalled worldwide, including about 70,000 in Germany.

“Corrosion of the brake booster in the worst case can cause the connection between the brake pedal and the braking system to break. As a result, the service brake may stop functioning,” said KBA, quoted from The Guardian on Sunday, June 5.

Mercedes-Benz confirmed the recall in a statement to the AFP news agency. The company said the move was based on "analysis of isolated reports for specific vehicles".

"In rare cases of very severe corrosion, it is possible that very strong or violent braking maneuvers cause mechanical damage to the brake booster, in which connection between the brake pedal and the brake system will fail," Mercedes said.

"In very rare cases, it is not possible to slow down the vehicle via the service brake. Thus, the risk of an accident or injury will increase," the company added, as quoted by Antara as well.

The company said the recall would be carried out as soon as possible and contacted potentially affected vehicle owners.

“The recall process will involve inspecting potentially impacted vehicles and depending on the results of the inspection, replacing parts if necessary. Until inspections are carried out, we ask customers not to drive their vehicles," the Stuttgart-based company said.
