26 Rohingya Refugees In Pekanbaru Escape, Officers Tighten Surveillance To Install 11 CCTV

PEKANBARU - Officials from the National Unity and Political Unity Agency (Bakesbangpol) of Pekanbaru City have tightened surveillance at the Rohingya refugee shelter in Pekanbaru following the escape of the 26 immigrants a few days ago.

"We prohibit refugees from leaving the area, they will be guarded for a certain time," said Head of the Pekanbaru City Kesbangpol Agency, Zulfahmi Adrian, quoted by Antara, Saturday, May 28.

He said the aim was to give the refugees time to adjust to recognizing the environment, and vice versa for the community around the refugee camps.

"Indeed, we have banned refugees from leaving the area for some time because they are new. This is just for adjustment," he said.

In addition to supervision using a guard. The Pekanbaru City Kesbangpol Agency also installed 11 surveillance cameras (CCTV) in several Rohingya refugee shelters to strengthen surveillance.

"We have installed new CCTV at 11 points, because previously CCTV was only on the front, and the buildings were all on the walls," he said.

Zulfahmi also explained that Pekanbaru City Kesbangpol officers and related officers were still searching for refugees who had fled. Possibly, this refugee fled to meet his family in Malaysia.

"It has not been found that they are expected to go to Malaysia because many of their families are there as refugees," he said.

He said that the dozens of refugees had fled because the security was not too tight, because they were deemed not to be feared.

"We are looking for them not like criminals, but we are still coordinating with the hope of community support if they see their whereabouts to report to us," he said.
